Memories of WWII
Stuart was born in Winnetka, Illinois on April 26, 1916. He was a law student at Yale. At the age of 24, Stuart founded America First Committee. This group was a group that was against the United States entery into WW2. They had more than 800,000 members and they were the largest anti-war group. They opposed it for many reasons, a couple being because of pacifism, politics and xenophobia. Staurt said in a interview back in 2000, "Most of us in our generation who were in any way thoughtful about history and international affairs learned that the U.S. didn’t accomplish very much in committing troops to the First World War, which was a terrible slaughter of the talent of the Western world; an internecine conflagration." After the attack on Pearl Harbor, the commitee ended. Stuart served in the United States Army during WWII and afterward he returned to Yale Law School. When he finshed law school, Stuart joined the Quaker Oats Company, where he worked for 38 years. On May 8th, he died of heart failure.
