Memories of WWII
Blanka was born in Lodz, Poland the year of 1922. She was an only child. She lived with her parents and grandmother. Her father died in 1937. After the German invasion of Poland, Blanka and her mother stayed in Lodz with her grandmother who was unable to travel. Along with other relatives, they were forced into the Lodz ghetto in 1940. They lived their life there in the ghetto. Blanka worked at a bakery and alongside her mother they worked at a hospital there. About 4 years later, Blanka and her family were seperated and she was sent to a concentration camp in Germany called Ravensbrueck. Her mother was sent to another camp. Then a few weeks later she was sent to work as a forced laborer at a airplane factory. In 1945 Soviet forces liberated the camp she was at. She was living in many different abandoned houses but evetually she made her way back to Lodz. When she got back she learned that her mother and the rest of her relatives had survived. Blanka then immigrated to the United States in 1947.
